EPA announces Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS) for power plants
Dec 22, 2011
On December 21, 2011, EPA announced new standards for power plants to limit mercury, acid gasses and other toxic pollution. The rule will effect all new, and approximately 1,400 existing, coal- and oil-fired electric utility steam generating units (EGUs). EGUs will have approximately four years to comply with the MATS. The new MATS apply to EGUs larger than 25 megawatts (MW) that burn coal or oil for the purpose of generating electricity for sale and distribution through the national electric grid to the public. For access to the new rule and technical information, visit EPA's website at http://www.epa.gov/airquality/powerplanttoxics/actions.html.
